Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - January 2019

Hellebore
This has been one of the mildest winters of recent years. Rain, of course, a little frost, no snow. I'm always wishing for snow, even when sprouting bulbs and buds on trees hint that spring is around the corner. It's certainly a time of mixed feelings! Perhaps by saying that this has been a mild winter, I will jinx us and bring some snow.

Thanks to Carol at May Dreams Gardens for hosting the monthly roundup of blooms, even when her garden is buried under six inches of snow.

First snowdrop
Wintersweet - chimonanthus
Rosemary
The slugs like primroses
Camellia 'Winter's Snowman'
Camellia 'Yuletide', seems oddly late this year
Hamamelis x 'Birgit' - hard to see in photos, but a brighter red than 'Diane'
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane'
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane'
Sarcococca scents up the whole corner of the front yard
Cyclamen coum, also a favorite of the slugs
Fuchsia 'Genii' may bloom year round
Helleborus 'Cinnamon Snow'
Helleborus, unknown
Lewisia continues to bloom

Inside, my kitchen counter is crowded with bulbs. Paperwhites that I picked up on sale after Christmas are blooming. Hyacinths that were forced in the fridge and then the garage are coming soon. And I've just finished repotting my amaryllises, the four big ones spent some time in the garage so hopefully they will bloom; the others are babies.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - January 2017

Forsythia in the kitchen window

The ground has been frozen solid for most of 2017, winter holds tight finally after warm temperatures the previous two winters. The winter blooming plants have been showing off for weeks anyway, they don't mind the cold.

Helleborus 'Cinnamon Snow'

Helleborus 'Pink Frost'

Last frosty blooms on the Camellia 'Yuletide'

Pieris japonica, only a few blooms open

A few plants are teasing with buds, but will be weeks before any real blooms.

Forsythia

Oregon grape

Probably a daffodil

Indoors, my collection of African violets is multiplying, paperwhites continue to bloom, and the forsythia branch that I accidentally broke and brought in to force in a vase is cheering up my kitchen window.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - December 2016

Camellia 'Yuletide'
Our long fall is finally over with freezing temperatures at night for most of the last two weeks and a dash of snow.

There are still a few fall blooms hanging on in my front yard, but looking tattered now.

Creeping thyme

Hollyhocks, I doubt these buds will open all the way

A few lingering rose buds

Also a few last annuals in the hanging pots, now sitting on the back patio.

I have just a few winter blooming plants, looking for ideas for more!

Rosemary

Chimonanthus aka wintersweet
Camellia 'Yuletide', planted in September

'Tis the season for indoor plants. It was getting dark by the time I took these pictures.

Spider plant has been blooming most of the year

Paperwhites in the kitchen window
African violet

Also indoors - I have to show off this bearded iris from last week, it is a 'Hemstitched' that I just planted in August. I noticed that it was trying to bloom early this month and cut it before the frost. Two of the buds opened indoors and it is as lovely (and scented) as I had hoped.
